Ohana Education

Our Philosophy

'Ohana,' means family; no one is left behind.
Ohana College offers a dynamic secondary education characterised by a safe, inclusive, supportive, progressive, and flexible learning environment. Our mission is to empower young people to achieve both individual and collective success through an engaging, enjoyable, and future-focused program. We strive to develop lifelong learners who are productive, compassionate, and actively involved in their communities. We believe that 21st-century learning encompasses not only academic achievement but also crucial social and emotional well-being skills.

Teaching & Learning Overview

Ohana College integrates the Australian Curriculum with real world challenges and lifelong skills for learning.

Ohana College is a co-educational secondary school offering a nurturing and inclusive 21st century focused educational and well-being program.

As a special assistance school, we cater for a diverse range of students’ learning, developing and nurturing the emotional, psychological and physical needs of our students.

Our curriculum is aligned to the Australian Curriculum, the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) and guided by the Alice Springs (Mparntwe) Declaration on Educational Goals for Young Australians. Ohana College staff evaluate high quality, responsive and supportive programs with respect to the abilities, aptitudes and development of our students. Through targeted teaching of core subjects such as English, Mathematics and Science.

Ohana College embeds literacy and numeracy intervention strategies for those students who require additional assistance, knowing that these fundamentals are the building blocks of education. Senior students are able to begin their career pathways from year 9 if they are 15 years of age. One of our senior programs includes obtaining the Queensland Certificate of Education through non-traditional pathways, such as through third party RTO training and work experience programs as part of individualised set plans. Students begin their path to autonomy by self-directing their own pathways.

Curriculum 7-9

Ohana College delivers the Australian Curriculum in a flexible, engaging manner within smaller class settings.

At Ohana College, our Year 7-9 curriculum is guided by the Australian National Curriculum, offering a supportive and engaging learning environment across core subjects, including English, Mathematics, Science, HASS, Health and Physical Education (HPE), Technologies, and the Arts. We prioritise ‘hands-on’ learning experiences, ensuring students are actively engaged in their educational journey.
To support the diverse needs of our learners, we embed targeted Literacy and Numeracy skills lessons, addressing and filling any learning gaps. Our differentiated assessment approach is designed to cater to individual learning needs, fostering growth and confidence in every student. Through scaffolded lessons and personalised support, Ohana College provides a nurturing foundation for success in middle school and beyond.

Senior Pathways at Ohana College

Learning with purpose. Pathways with direction.

At Ohana College, students can pursue a range of pathways depending on their goals, whether they are looking to complete Year 10, achieve their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE), progress to further study or university, or transition into the world of work.
Our senior program is designed to support individual student pathways, combining academic learning, vocational opportunities, career planning and personal development. Students are supported to discover their strengths, reconnect with learning and build a clear plan for life beyond school.
